The root cause is usually simple: the drywall contractor finished to a standard that works for texture or wallpaper, but not for the paint spec the builder actually needs. Level 4 is fine for many applications. Level 5 — a full skim coat over the entire surface — is what you need for flat, matte, or high-sheen paints in finished living spaces.

Our Process, Step by Step

Hang and tape. We start with precision installation. Boards are hung tight, seams are taped properly, and fasteners are set correctly. This isn't glamorous work, but it's the foundation everything else depends on.

Level 5 skim coat. We apply a full skim coat over the entire surface — not just the seams and corners. This eliminates texture variation, tool marks, and any surface irregularity that would show through paint. It takes more time than Level 4. It's worth it.

Prime and inspect. Before any finish paint goes on, we prime the surface and inspect it under raking light. Raking light — a light source held at a low angle to the wall — reveals every imperfection that flat lighting hides. If we find something, we fix it before the painter ever picks up a brush.

Custom paint application. Our same crew applies the finish coat. Flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss — whatever the spec calls for. Because we finished the surface, we know exactly what it needs. There's no guesswork, no surprises, and no callbacks.
